he five-speed exists..
I have a factory fitted '86 MK Patrol with a five speed and it is genuine. Nissan built them either from 84 or 85 onwards. I have the original owners manual that lists the 5-speed. For anyone that has a copy of the Nissan Service Manual (no: SM4E0160GO) that covers both the 160 and 61 series Patrols (ie: G60s and MQ/MKs), you'll note that it was published in 1980 - at least four or five years before they introduced the five speed so if anyone is reading from this - it could be causing a bit of confusion.
For those that have the Gregory's No 500 MQ Series Patrol manual (this is the diesel only), it covers the period 1980-87 and the five speed is mentioned on p-88. The first paragraph quotes the following: "On the Nissan Patrol MQ series models equipped with the SD33 diesel and CS33T turbo diesel engine, two types of transmission are installed, the F4W81A four speed and the FS5W81A five speed. On five speed models, a T130A transfer case is standard and on the four speed models, a T130A or a T100L transfer case may be installed". So, the five-speed exists, unfortunately the manual does not state when it was first produced.
Although the Gregorys manual refers to the five speed in the diesel, like lots of things, the gearbox is interchangeable with the P40, SD33 and L28 engines. It is safe to assume that the five speed replaced the four speed box somewhere around the 1985 timeframe across all engine types at the time. Someone else might have a more accurate date. Hope this helps.
