Boas

WAR!
By Kurt Schneider
Pirate4x4.com Land Use Officer
Pirate4x4.com command central in the fight!

A two inch headline in print media is generally reserved for a major event such a war or massive earthquake. I have used this size headline to illustrate that the OHV community is in the fight for its life, and many people are not aware of this fact. We are not at war with any specific group, but a project. By court order, the Forest Service must enact the Route Designation project in every National Forest across the United States.

Route designation will close literally THOUSANDS of miles of forest roads and trails in every national forest, severely limiting public access to public lands, not only for the OHV community, but hunters, campers, MX and ATV enthusiasts, bird watchers, photographers and just about anyone who wants to travel through a national forest in a motorized vehicle.

El Dorado National forest, a forest with a large concentration of 4x4 trails such as the Rubicon, Barrett Lake trail, Deer Valley and many others, is the first forest to undergo Route Designation. It is critical that the OHV community fights for its trails in this forest and sets the standard for the fight in other forests. All eyes are on ELDO National, looking to see how the public responds and because of Pirate4x4.com, they have.

A quick look at any other 4x4 bulletin boards or websites will show very little involvement or interest in land-use issues. These forums on other boards are generally neglected and have very few posts. No so on Pirate4x4.com. In the past two years, the land-use forum on Pirate has exploded with activity and activism because of the pending route designation project. No other place online has such up to date and correct information as the Pirate4x4.com Land-use section. The biggest contribution form the Land-use group is the amount of events and activism that Pirate4x4.com has spawned.

One example of this is the Pleasant Hill meeting by the Forest Service on route designation, a meeting which would not have happened unless Pirate4x4.com BB member “WLDWUN” had asked the forest service to hold a meeting in the Bay Area. After Pirate4x4.com BB members came together and passed out thousands of informational flyers to individuals and businesses in order to get the word out, the forest service meetings were packed with informed forest users.

Don Amador, Blue Ribbon’s Western Representative, was recently quoted on Blue Ribbon’s website about the Pleasant Hill meeting. He had said, "This is certainly the largest OHV access-related meeting in California that I have attended since starting with the Coalition in the early 1990s. The record crowd was informed and highly motivated. It is clear they care deeply about their continued access to and active management of federal forest lands. They also understand that the Eldorado National Forest is just the tip of the route planning iceberg."

Pleasant Hill Route Designation meeting draws record crowd.

Through the Pirate4x4.com Land-use forums, many other events have been planned or are in the works. Activities such as rallies, letter writing campaigns, workshops, fund raisers, forest service field trips, petitions and various other gatherings and meetings have been created by Pirate4x4.com BB members.

If you are not active in helping to save our trails, NOW IS THE TIME! The fight cannot be left to groups such as Blue Ribbon, FOTR or CAL4wd. The way in which Route Designation is configured, any individual has just as much say in responding to the process as a group, therefore your personal response to the project is critical is saving our trails.

ONE FINAL, IMPORTANT NOTE:

It is important to remember that the forest service IS NOT the bad guy. Several “green” groups sued the forest service for lack of proper management of its roads. Inadequately funded, the forest service had its back to the wall, and had to comply with the court order to re-designate routes. They are just doing the job handed down to them. The project is the enemy, not the ones implementing it. We must work with the forest service, not against them........"

:crybaby: :crybaby:
